Charleville to Winton

Image
The nice day time weather continues with cool overnight temperatures.  David and I have been riding almost every day, exploring Charleville, Augathella, Tambo and Blackall.   At Charleville we had a bit of luxury by staying in a campground with power and water.  We visited the Cosmos experience at Charleville where we looked through some expensive telescopes at the night sky.  There were a few nice coffee establishments and a good Thai restaurant where we enjoyed our last dinner in town.   We free camped at Augathella and Tambo by rivers and had a great pub meal at Tambo.  At Blackall we got a really nice spot by the river on the town common so stayed 4 nights.  There are some great coffee places there and a few things to see and do, including the thermal pool/aquatic centre which is popular with grey nomads. Our next nearly free camp at $5 a night was beside the Barcoo River at Isisford.  The great weather and bike rides kept goin...

South West Queensland

As we get further into Queensland the weather improves - a bit.  Clear blue skies but cold nights. The unsealed road from the NSW border to our first stop at Noccundra was open to 4WD but had been badly damaged by the recent rain.  There was lots of water lying in the depressions and the numerous creek crossings.  The next night we camped beside the Bullo River again, this time at Thargamindah.  We we met up with Barry and Keran at Quilpie where a couple of nights beside the lake and another beside the Bullo River again. Next on the itinerary was a visit to Hell Hole Gorge.  We stayed at Adavale and used that as a base from which to do a day trip to the gorge. After Adavale we headed along the dirt to Ambathala Creek for a night then anither nughtt at a farm stay on Tyrone Station.  The highlight at Tyrone was the view from the escarpment and the cave walk featuring Butt Rock. Camped by the waterhole at Noccundra Morning tea stop on the way to Thargom...

New South Wales

Recent rains caused many road closures so we skipped going to Pooncarie and instead we drove up to Silverton.where we camped at Penrose Park for a few nights. Willie and I had a a few good rides around town but found the ride up to the rubbish tip wasn't worthwhile.   We all enjoyed a dinner at the pub although the weather was a bit cold and we were seated in a semi outdoor area. After Silverton we stayed in a caravan park at Broken Hill for a few days.  We visited the Bell Street 1950s milk bar a couple of times for much needed morning coffee.  Although it was still cold in Broken Hill we managed to get in a few walks and bike rides. A few days later we started north again with a couple of nights camped at an old hotel site at Lake Cobham.   The lake looks good on the map but there's no water there.  There are several large bottle dumps from the hotel that no longer exists. After an overnight stay at Milparinka we had mornos at Tiboorburra then on to Warri...
